Wisdom for Warriors-3

November 12, 2010

Greetings,

On Fear: from Dune… A timeless litany, you don’t overcome fear, you pass through it…

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

  • Bene Gesserit Litany Against Fear.

On Flow:

A process cannot be understood by stopping it. Understanding must move with the flow of the process, must join it and flow with it.

  • The First Law of Mentat, quoted by Paul Atreides

And this is a crucial one, least understood by every teaching “method”, much to our collective detriment…

On Learning:

Muad’Dib learned rapidly because his first training was in how to learn. And the first lesson of all was the basic trust that he could learn. It’s shocking to find how many people do not believe they can learn, and how many more believe learning to be difficult. Muad’Dib knew that every experience carries its lesson.

  • from The Humanity of Muad’Dib by the Princess Irulan

On Asymmetry:

Deep in the human unconscious is a pervasive need for a logical universe that makes sense. But the real universe is always one step beyond logic.

  • from The Sayings of Muad’Dib by the Princess Irulan

Fear, Flow, Learning, Logic…..

All critical components of what makes up the mind-state of any one of us at any given time. We are, of course at effect to many many other factors, external and internal.

But Fear that leaves you wiser, Flow that allows you to expend less effort to greater effect, Learning, by first learning how to learn and Asymmetry, or the apparent lack of logic….

These are a warrior’s friends.

Or his/her worst foes.

Deep meaning in every one of the quotes above. And apropos for our times of high weirdness.

Don’t be fear-less, be un-fearing.

Vivek and all – Fear is a good thing if you do not let it control you . It comes in many different forms but can be your friend. The secret is to be able to control it . An example, you are about to undertake an event that you know is life threatening and after doing this numerous times you realize that the same fear is always present. So the solution is to learn to take your fear and set it aside and go ahead and complete your task and in doing so you overcome and control that particular fear a little bit more each time . You become the master not it . This can be done in all events and eventually the fear is reduced to a small thing . But remember fear serves a purpose and should not be completely overlooked, in fact it should be respected. But it can be controlled and this is very empowering and has a freeing/liberating feel to it . Once this is experienced and understood all other fears are lessened and approachable and your life experience expanded. Living within the boundaries of your own fears is not really living at all, it is existing and rationalizing. I can give specific examples if necessary .
